The Statewide Indigenous Network has been meeting now for about the last 9 years. It was recognized that a Co-ordination position for the Network was necessary and with the help of people such as Heather Holst, Mark Stracey and Deb Tsorbaris the position came to fruition in February 2007. It also goes without saying that without the vast support of all past and current members this Network would not be where it is today.
At present the network is made up of Housing workers taking in all regions. The Network started with a membership of around 15 and to date has grown to a membership of nearly 50 workers.
Throughout the Network's History we have been able to meet due to the assistance of funding from the Department of Human Services. Each time the Network has met we have convened meetings at different parts of the state and where possible involved mainstream agencies from that area to attend. The Network has agreed that without the assistance of many mainstream organisations, the work we are trying to achieve would be that much harder to achieve.
The Indigenous network is committed to working with their communities in obtaining their people more affordable and sustainable housing. The members work with Indigenous people seeking crisis, emergency, transitional and long-term housing. Those also at risk of losing their tenancies are also assisted through the ITAR (Indigenous Tenants at Risk) program.
The members are also committed to meeting quarterly where we have the opportunity to discuss the issues facing our communities and working towards solving these problems. These meetings are a chance for all the indigenous workers across the State to come together and be kept up to date with any new changes going on within the housing sector. It is also a chance for the members to meet and Network amongst themselves which is beneficial for those working with their Indigenous communities. The meetings are held with a cultural feel to them and where possible held in culturally appropriate venues.
